About Band
Matt Moody is the frontman for longstanding East Nashville institutions Hands Down Eugene and, to quote myself, the “gaunt, heavily bearded wizard of the East.” Though still sprouted from the shambolic, Lennon-planted psych-pop tree, Moody’s new project, A Country Gentleman, takes a slightly different approach. It’s minimalist, lo-fi and folk-leaning, instrumentally. Of course, “folk-leaning, instrumentally” typically just means “he uses acoustic instruments.” And yes, Pardoned — the 15-track debut from A Country Gentleman, now available for download at acountrygentleman.bandcamp.com — predominantly features Moody plucking, strumming and picking away at an acoustic guitar. But in classic Moody, grungy psych-folk fashion, there are the fuzzy riffs, the catchy, reflective, tenor vocals, and the occasional auxiliary percussion. According to Battle Tapes honcho and onetime Hands Down Eugene member Jeremy Ferguson — who mastered Pardoned — the prolific Mr. Moody has already created a second A Country Gentleman record and has a third in the works. For such a monster chiller, Moody sure is a hustler.
