About Band
The guys in Against The Grain started playing their instruments as children in grade school. With no real "dreams or aspirations", they grew in their skills. Eventually God brought these three guys together in Lancaster City through their church home, Newsong Fellowship Church. As they started growing in their faith and in their friendship, opportunities started to show themselves...
It all started when Tyler's youth pastor, Ben Murray, taught him how to lead worship in his small youth group in Lancaster, Pa. Eventually Scott and a few others joined in and the "youth band" was started. The chemistry of this group grew closer and they had success in leading their youth group and church in little time. Later Tyler Hornberger wrote his first song titled "Romans 12". This song carried a theme of not being a product of this world but living 100% for God. After completing this, he realized that he could write music and continued to do so. Drummer Scott Mosebach also began writing songs early on such as the tune "Show Me" and later the combined efforts of Tyler and Scott produced songs such as "Freedom" and "I Need You".
As Tyler and Scott grew closer, they shared their thoughts of music and writing and talked of starting a band. Around this time, former bass player Bobby Bradley made his way to Newsong. Bobby turned out to be an extremely gifted bass and guitar player, and eventually the three guys recorded a 3-song demo, handed it into a local coffee shop, and named themselves "Against The Grain". The newly titled band started playing this venue once or twice a month and started to talk about recording a full-length demo CD. But things were put on hold when Bobby decided to move into a band with his elder brothers. This left the guys short one man to make an operational band, and they started a search for a bassist.
Their search being a success, Tyler and Scott recruited the then 14-year-old Max Battle to step in at bass. Max brought a completely different energy to Against The Grain due to the fact of his long hair, Converse "Chucks", and 1960's Aviators on stage. Towering over the rest of the band, he didn't need a stage to appear taller than adiences. Now back to their 3-piece selves, they began gigging at local coffee shops once more. The guys then picked up where their thoughts had left off and began preparing for recording a CD.
After a few months of hard work in the studio, the guys produced "The Other Way Around". This is an 8 track project consisting of their fan-favorite "Freedom" and many of AtG's founding songs. (You may contact us for a purchase of this CD).
Shortly after the Release, the guys were jammin with Bobby, the founding bass player of AtG, and found out that he had been contemplating on re-joining the band. He then made an offer and they accepted him as their lead guitarist and vocalist.
After 2 years of growing and changes, Against The Grain now consists of Tyler on guitars and lead vocals, Max on bass guitar, Bobby on lead guitar and vocals, and Scott on drums.
The following is two verses that seems to have become a foundation for the message of Against the Grain...
Romans 12:1-2 - "And so, dear brotheres and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice--the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." - The Holy Bible: NIV
