About Band
Baxter were formed in the winter of 2006 on the dirty streets of London when Justin Thomson and Kev McEwan responded to an advert in the NME by Scott MacRae and Dave Harris. The add was simple - 'bassist and singer required to join new garage/post punk band ... scenesters need not apply'. Two weeks later the band were in the studio demoing 2 newly written songs- 'Breakdown At The Arcade' and Hitting On Me'- the first about drunken days on the dole and the latter, an anthem for those who have ever been beaten up. During that year, a string of gigs ensued with the set list ever changing as the band continued to write new material before every gig.
Picking up guitarist and keys player Steve Keegan along the way- 2007 was spent gigging, writing, recording, fighting and drinking. This seen the band play and headline some of Londons top venues including The Dublin Castle, Half Moon, Purple Turtle, Pleasure Unit, Soho Revue, Dirty South, The Marquee and the Clapham Grand, earning a reputation for erratic live shows - sometimes inspirational and enigmatic but other times descending into farce as in-fighting between band members threatened to boil over onstage.
Any band featuring two Englishmen, a Scotsman, a South African and a Kiwi from very different backgrounds was always going to have some tension but instead of imploding, the band channeled this into the music and created a sound instantly recognisable as their own. Pulling from the bands diverse range of influences the music is dark and gritty though still retaining something anthemic and uplifting.
Having already released their debut single on their own Gutterlove Records in 2007, the band are just completing work on their new EP 'Call Off The Search' with producer Nick Abbot (Foals, Datsuns, The Subways, Transgressive Records) which will feature live favourites Gutterlove, In The City, Volcano, Knives and a reworking of last years single Break In Tradition.
The Call Off The Search EP is due for general release in March 2008 and the band will be gigging all over the UK, including headline shows at three of London's most iconic venues The Clapham Grand, The Marquee Club and The Garage. The band will also be giving away the EP free of charge as part of the Baxter Revolution, go to www.baxteruk.com
