Just eighteen-years old and an upstanding citizen of the great state of Minnesota, Berg Holmgren is an entirely self-taught pianist, guitarist, and drummer who has taken a shot at writing and recording his own music. Berg admits that he can hardly read sheet music, adding, “I for sure can’t read bass clef,” yet Berg uses his unique ability to play by ear and intuition to create a sound all his own. For the past few years Berg has been writing music on his family’s old piano but had no way of recording his songs until the components he needed slowly fell into place as Berg would stumble across them. When he acquired an old electronic keyboard from his sister, he was able experiment with more complex sounds and rhythms, and a year later Berg found an old Garage Band installer CD and loaded it onto his family’s nearly decade-old Mac. It was not until a friend gave him a MIDI cord that Berg had no reason not to record his work and finally put the skills he had developed over the past few years into action. Though Berg had the ability to record, he lacked the technology and space he wanted in order to develop his sound. Yet, he configured what he affectionately refers to as his “crappy set-up,” using his nearly ancient computer in his family’s dining room and singing into the millimeter microphone built-in to his computer. Because Berg was self-conscious about his parents hearing his new music and because he wanted to curb the sounds of daily life his low-quality microphone was certain to pick up, Berg would wait until everyone was either asleep or out of the house to begin recoding and would accomplish most of his work between 9pm and 2am. Having never played his music for anyone, Berg decided to test the waters by sending a few songs he recorded to a several trusted friends. He was encouraged by their positive feedback and when one friend suggested that he make a Facebook fan page, Berg decided to go for it. Not twenty-four hours after he created the page, Berg noticed that he already had 150 fans, and not two weeks later, his page had grown to 500 fans.
