Group Name: No Assumptionz
Group Members: Karizzma (Vocalist), Sima Lee (Lyricist)
Antoinette “Karizzma” Tillery from an early age was known for her strong singing abilities. Raised in Newburgh, New York and then later moving to Hampton, Virginia, she would learn to pefect her sound through the numerous requests she would get to perform in showcases, concerts, weddings and choirs. Her sophisticated vocals were always met with rave reviews. It was during a particular Choir performance for South African activist Bishop Desmond Tutu In New York City that Karizzma decided that music would be her lifelong journey, and ultimately her profession. Gaining inspiration from many genres of music, her style would grow to reflect her eclectic taste.Having worked on her professional demo in 2001 with area producers, she would go on to audition and meet with several national record label A&R’s. Karizzma felt she was finally getting closer to her goals when a personal tragedy forced her to take a major hiatus. Pursuing a medical career and taking care of her family became her main priority, but the desire to chase her dreams never left the forefront of her mind.
Ebony “Sima Lee” Outlaw was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. With both her father and mother being devoted singers in Gospel choirs some may have thought she would follow in their footsteps, but she would have other plans in mind. Finding that she was blessed with a particular talent for writing poetry and rhymes in High School ,combined with her lifelong love of Hip-Hop culture she began battling and performing around the 757 area. Often being the only female participating never discouraged Sima Lee, and only fueled her drive, which garnered her much respect as a lyricist. However, she too would go on to take a hiatus from music to raise a family, and pursue a spiritual path that eventually led her to live in Cairo, Egypt to study religion and culture for several years. Upon her return she did a brief stint with the Army, but deciding that military life definitely wasn’t for her she attended college to become a teacher. But just like Karizzma her desire to make it in the music industry stayed with her constantly.
Ironically the internet would be the catalyst that would bring Sima Lee back into the music world. Connecting with other artists, poets, and producers on media sites would rekindle her desire to express herself on the microphone and perform throughout the East Coast. She would go on to release a solo mix tape, form a Spoken Word duo and a Hip-Hop group, and even be published in a poetry anthology as a result.
Via the World Wide Web she collaborated with producers nationally and internationally including: Denmark, Hungary and, Canada...landing her on various mix tapes and singles, and earning her quite a buzz as a ferocious and witty emcee. After appearing on a mix tape for the Official Wu Tang Clan site in 2006 she would hook up with a talented producer from Nottingham by the name of Endemic who had already produced for respected veteran artists such as Smiff N Wesson aka Coco Brovaz, Skyzoo, Ill Bill, Buddah Monk, and Timbo King.In 2009 she would be featured on two singles on Endemic’s debut album released by Money Maker/EMI Records entitled “Terminal Illness” released in the U.K. and U.S. It featured heavy hitters such as Killah Priest of WuTang Clan, Planet Asia, Sean Price from Boot Camp Clik, Sav Killz, and The Wisemen.
2009 would be a pivotal year since this is also when Karizzma, who had already began her own return to the stage after her unforeseen break, was introduced to Sima Lee via mutual friends. Realizing that they both had a mutual passion for making music they began working together and would go on to form the duo “No Assumptionz”.Recruiting production from Gordo Beats, Wally Clark, and Brandon Heat they would record and release their self-titled EP in 2010.Combining Karizzma’s sultry and soulful voice with Sima Lee’s intelligent and confident delivery proved to be a perfect match and is generating a lot of attention in VA and beyond, and earning them many fans. Recently the ladies were even offered an opportunity to appear on a Hip-Hop based reality show that will be pitched to Fox TV Network. One would have to keep an eye on these ladies to see what the future has in store for them, but one thing is certain, with as much talent that they possess, and determination to never let go of their dreams, nothing short of success could be the ultimate destiny for “No Assumptionz”.
