‘Emotional Baggage Handlers’ (EBH) is a three-piece band, offering a lively, tuneful helping of real rock ‘n’ roll- punchy enough to get the body moving, but not so loud as to send people scurrying for the exits with their hands covering their ears. EBH are NOT about stacked heels, smoke bombs, pointy guitars and leotards. They just set up, tune up and play.
EBH is: Carolyn (vocals, bass guitar, keyboards) Joe (drums) and Raff
They’ve been together since October 2007, but they’ve all been playing music since their teens or earlier-
As a youngster, Carolyn studied classical piano and played flute in the Moomba youth band, as well as performing in many live music theatre productions. She has since kept her passion alive singing with a number of guitarists, piano players and more recently with community choirs, ‘Shaking The Tree’ and ‘Living Out Loud’. Carolyn brings to EBH her powerful bass playing and shimmering vocal harmonies.
Joe's had experience with a number of Melbourne cover bands such as Alternative Soul, Just For Kicks and 5’oclock Rock playing everything from Hard Rock to Top 40 and 50’s Rock ‘n Roll. He brings a variety of styles which perfectly suits the subtle yet energetic rhythms of EBH's songs.
The guitarist/ songwriter learned his stuff back in the ‘80’s/ ‘90’s, playing other people’s music- from seminal Melbourne ska outfit Loonee Tunes to Robinvale cowpunks The T-Bones and anything in between. His twenty years of experience includes playing with Irish/ Australian folk groups, Rockabilly bands and R’n’B/ Soul ‘revue’-type showbands. More recently, he went underground for a few years, busking with an acoustic guitar. He has a unique vocal style and an energetic, playful, sometimes cheeky approach to guitar.
EBH’s sound is a blend of many influences:- R’n’B (Ray, Otis and Aretha), the ballsy Funk grooves of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Roots and Punk reminiscent of late-‘70s bands like Stray Cats, Specials, Bad Manners and radio-friendly Powerpop such as Blondie, The Police, Concrete Blonde, The Kinks and The Beatles. Local influences such as Cold Chisel, Radio Birdman, Living End and Weddings Parties Anything ‘surface’ in Raff’s unmistakably Australian songs.
EBH’s live shows to-date have included a number of Melbourne venues such as Barbukka on Smith St, Collingwood, the Noise Bar and The Retreat in Brunswick, The Empress Hotel in North Fitzroy, The Bender Bar in Thornbury and St Kilda Bowling Club as well as having performed at many parties. This has shown the trio that they have the ability to entertain and engage ANY rock ’n roll crowd. Community radio station 3RRR has played a couple of their songs too.
As well as dozens of original songs, EBH can rattle out covers with the best of them (as long as it’s fun!) They have a repertoire approaching 50 songs and are eager to play at YOUR licensed venue, legalised gambling hell, campus event, corporate function, music festival, sporting event, protest rally, private party or luxury resort. They are a tight, professional, entertaining rock and roll band.
