About Band

Living in the hood is depressing. Most of the time there is no food, no money, nothing. Just dreams.

Though a lot of people living in North Philadelphia look at dreams as a waste of time, two brothers passionately chased them,
vowing to bring their hopes of "something better" to fruition.

Grease Monkeys were created from the negativity that surrounded Puerto Rican/Costa Rican brothers:
Drunken Monkey King (a.k.a Ic Flair),
and Sars Simian (a.k.a Mekz One "The Black Mage"). "We produce music to escape our problems, but also to confront alot of the bullshit the average hoodcat faces living in the hood." says Mekz One, the older of the two "...both my brother and I have balance between us, so we use that to mold the sound."

This balance have landed the two brothers much public attention as they pursued their own distinct form of song writing and production. Using spaced-out lyricism with a twist of reality, psychodelic saturday-morning funk (courtesy of Mekz One), cutting edge nostalgia (courtesy of Ic Flair), and a revolutionary attitude that you can only expect from proud, young latin men living under the harsh conditions of inner-city life. The Grease Monkeys who hail from an area of the city known as "The Badlandz", set out to formulate an original sound, style, and movement.

According to anyone who has encountered this "Dynamic-Duo", they certainly have accomplished that. When asked if they thought they had what it takes to be one of the greatest groups of all time, Ic Flair had this to say:

"We are one of the greatest groups of all time, that's not arrogance, that's confidence!" - Ic Flair

They started writing and recording (as a unit) in 2003.

Separately, Mekz One "The Black Mage" has been producing and writing since 1999. Starting out with a mixer/sampler and a tape deck, he has evolved into a much more intricate form production.
Ic Flair has been writing poetry since he was in middle school and started writing songs in high school. His production came years later when he decided to persue alternative forms of musical expression.

Their road has been paved with many performances accredited to their tenacity and "hunger". Opening up for plenty of well respected acts such underground hip-hop powerhouses:
*Killah Priest (of Wu-Tang-Clan)
*Wize Intelligent (of Poor Righteous Teachers)
*Cee Knowledge (of Digable Planets)

and other well respected local acts such as:
*Godhead The General (of THOR Takeover)
*PH formally Pumpkinhead (of Brooklyn Academy)
and many more.

In the summer of 2008 The Grease Monkeys decided to take a brief hiatus to settle professional ventures. Now they're back with an even greater tenacity then before and out to show the world that despite coming from nothing, they're gonna "...touch the sky before we die!"

Being musically different has had it's advantages over the years helping them to establish a solid name in the Philly music scene. Never willing to sacrifice their artistic integrity takes premise over most priorities in their eyes. "We're just not willing to bend..." Says Ic Flair (the younger of the two), "...we're not sitting up at night thinking of ways to make popular music, we're making OUR music popular. Point blank!!!"  Their unique approach to song writing/recording has definitely gained them notoriety amongst their peers, and has made them respected staples in Hip-Hop.

"We're an eclectic mix of dope and genius." - Ic Flair

Their Debut Album "On the Origin of Species" set to be released in the fall of 2009.
