Given the currrent structure of the music industry , it's refreshing to know that there still remains a small handful of truly talented and original acts who hover just beyond the periphery of our bleek new cultural landscape. Tennessee native Jason Garrett Gammon is surely one of the more formidable in that ever-shrinking band of phantoms known as the singer/songwriter/guitarist/arranger/all - around capable musician. Borrowing from old masters too numerous to list here , Gammon has managed to forge a sound and style that is not easily described in one sitting. His prodigous (sometimes mysterious) lyrics instantly beckon to your intelligence , while at the same time some uncipherable madness just beyond the southern - drawled baritone of his voice whispers "all is not well in the world". Melodically , each song of Gammon's debut album Electric Folk stands independent of the next ; be it the recognizable country - rock twang of "In Hell with Judas & Robert Ford" , the grunge leanings of "Come , Follow Me" , or the psychedelic undertones of "California Alley" . Synergy abounds however , almost in spite of itself , and listening from the opening intro of the lead track to the closing chords of the last poses no distinct stylistic flaws. In short , Gammon is the real deal; a guitar - slinging , poet's heart possessing , silver - tounged southern devil of a musician who would do the listening world a great service to continue onward with his unique brand of slightly off - center genius. I have a feeling the best is yet to come with this one - so keep your ears up - we just might see a little history made in the very near future.
