after he was laid-off from his engineering position at Boeing, due to cut backs. She understands the financial struggles of starting a business from scratch. "There was a time when we almost lost our home. If it hadn't been for God, and Spirit-filled people who care, and obey God's leadings, we would have!" she says. Now their business is well-known, growing rapidly, and is about to add another branch of the business, tile floors! "We give God all the glory! He has been our supplier and taken care of us through everything, He never fails!" she remarks. Her oldest, Calon, loves to work with cars. Their youngest, Dillon, is a Series Champion MX racer, and also races Flat Track, Trials, SuperMoto, Enduro, and Road Racing. He is also working towards being a drummer for a Christian rock band. He says he hopes it's his mom's band!
In 2004, her ex-husband, Junior Steinke; Calon's father, died from Leukemia in September, and in November, of the same year, her brother-in-law, Mike Thurber, was killed in a tragic car accident. This past December, 2005, her father, James Brackin, died from complications of Alzheimers after battling it for ten years. "God never said life would be easy, but He did say He would always be there for us, love us, provide for us, and never leave us," Joni says. "And He has been true to every Word. He is so good and so faithful!" Her faith is one of the strongest things about her. She believes there is a definite reason for everything, even if we don't understand it right now, and situations are not always as they seem. "I know that, "God works all things together for the good of those who love and trust Him and are called according to His purpose", so I know that God is using all of my life's experiences to make me the person He wants me to be, so I can be used by Him the best way possible. I know that because of things I've been through, I can better empathize with people and be more understanding of their situations, and hopefully they will see Christ's love for them through me," she says.
She believes that God wants her to use her experiences and her music to influence people for Christ, and to give them encouragement and hope. She has been immersed in music since day one. Her mother says she was singing right after she learned to talk. She began taking piano lessons at age five, took for twelve years, and won several recitals. She also plays the flute and she was First Chair flute in her high school concert band. Just a few years ago, Joni began to feel a definite call into the ministry of singing. Since that time, she has been a member of her home church, First Church of the Nazarene, choir and sometimes sings solos there, as well. She has been a member of Joni and Diane, a duet ministry, that has won awards at the Babbie Mason Music Conference International. As a soloist, she has been a special guest of the nationally known group, the B-Team Angels, has sung the National Anthem at Daytona Bike Week for a National Flat Track event, as well as for several other sporting events. She has sung for churches, retreats, etc., and at concerts, block parties, etc. "I want to sing whenever and wherever God wants me to; for one or for a million," says Joni. "I am just so thankful to be used by Him in any capacity, and for Him to use me through what I have always loved; music, that's so like God!"†
