About Band
The concept of Man Versus first came about in Belfast in late 2004 and early 2005, while Mick McLaughlin and Ryan Grieve were living in the five-bedroom death-trap known affectionately as 55 Fitz. At this point it was more of a side project for Grieve, but when highly-regarded Derry noiseniks Unless disintegrated in late 2005 Mick and Grieve started playing and writing together more intensively. After a few changes in line-up the two enlisted the services of Jim Hutcheon, a veteran of several bands in Derry, on St. Patrick's Day 2006.
A mutual hatred of cover bands and a style bearing little resemblance to anything else led to the decision to avoid the usual practice among Northern Irish bands of playing other people's songs peppered with a few originals. Mick, Jim and Grieve spent several months whittling Buckfast-drenched noises into a repertoire which would meet their exacting standards, and didn't sound like any other band in Belfast. A handful of live shows towards the end of 2006 met with a hugely favourable reception, after which the band took a breather to allow Mick to complete his university studies.
Now with a new EP in the pipeline, Man Versus are intent on putting Northern Ireland to the aural sword. Watch this space for gig listings and new recordings.
