About Band

“A real firecracker of a contemporary soul band, with all the features of that classic soul sound.  High energy and drive, breath-taking arrangements and delivered with all enveloping style, rhythm and furious energy.”

SOULFIRE are a dynamic four-piece, soul and heavy blues band, writing and performing their own original material. Born and bred in the north of Scotland, each band member has honed their individual talents around Scotland’s vibrant music scene. Based in Aberdeen, SOULFIRE features: Sarah Roberts (vocals), Lee Sangster (guitar), Paul Barclay (drums) and Chris Cameron (bass).

SOULFIRE first formed in 2010 when Paul and Lee, best friends and jamming partners for years, decided to get serious about their music and form the kind of band that they had always wanted to be in. Strongly influenced by the rock and roll music explosion of the 1960s – the Chicago blues scene, R&B Soul, Detroit Motown, and the mods and rockers of the British Invasion – the band that Paul and Lee envisaged needed a strong female vocal to set the band apart.

Pondering on where such a vocal could be found, Lee came across Sarah’s advert in R&B Music – a singer looking for a band to match her rich and vibrant vocals. One phone call, one beer and one jam session later, SOULFIRE was underway to becoming the full blown blues and soul experience that Lee, Paul and Sarah had dreamed of creating.

The next step was for SOULFIRE to find a talented bass player to complete their powerful and energetic sound. After answering to an advert featured on the Aberdeen music forum, Chris impressed SOULFIRE with his fat and funky bass lines and joined the band in January 2012.

The band’s influences are many and diverse – to list but a few of the great artists to which SOULFIRE owe their musical and lyrical inspiration; The Small Faces, Humble Pie, PP Arnold, Etta James, Nina Simone, The Black Keys, The Black Crowes, Free, Neil Young, Sly and the Family Stone, Grand Funk Railroad, Credence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, Patti Smith, Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, The Who, Prince, The Cure and The Smiths.

Despite often coming from totally different points of view, song writing duo Lee and Sarah have an uncanny ability to end up at the same place; resulting in a collaborative and strong lyrical partnership. With Paul and Chris’s tight rhythm section to bounce ideas off, SOULFIRE work together to deliver a compelling and emotive set.

SOULFIRE have recently been in the studio, recording their first EP, comprising five original songs. Lenny Webster joined them to lay down some soaring Hammond organ licks.

SOULFIRE’s debut EP No Good Woman will be available mid-year 2012
