Dear Reader,
First and foremost, we would like to thank you for your interest in our musical endeavor. It is with much passion that this music is composed and performed. This is not just a hobby for us, it is us. Be that as it may, I would like to share a few small pieces of information about ourselves.
The concept behind the name subtlecain was born of a heart bent on empathy and witnessing a world seemingly less and less interested in it. Cain, the Biblical first brother of Abel, slew his brother by crushing his head with a rock. While we as a society do not go around bludgeoning each other with rocks (at least not in any relevant statistical proportion) we do harm one another every day. Every injustice, every intentional act of cruelty, no matter how seemingly inconsequential, is a crime against our own humanity as well as against the victim of said cruelty. Each instance of indifference that a person is subjected to causes them to die a little. With every act of cruelty that an individual allows themselves to commit, a bit of their humanity is lost. We kill each other so subtly, and therefore we call this to attention by an admission of guilt and a summons to accountability through our name, subtlecain.
Not every song that we have written deals with this philosophy explicitly, it is however the driving force behind much of the music. Although we live in what is quite obviously an imperfect world, we believe that through a collective self-awareness we can each, as individuals, act in accordance with the still small voice inside of us to affect a positive impact on the people with whom we interact, minimizing the hurt we inflict and compromising never in our pursuit of the greater good.
It is our sincere hope for you and for all people that empathy would be the catalyst in your life. Love should not just be a reactive emotion, but rather a proactive approach to all that we think, say, and do. Let not the darkness of the world repress the light within you.
