About Band
Colin and Hamish are brothers born in northern England. Colin is the biological product of his mother, Erin, and father, Captain Obaid Rajar, a Pakistani Air Force exchange officer who was lost in a training excercise over Wales. Colin was nicknamed "Raji" by his English school mates due to his South Asian blood, and he endured a lonely early childhood. Two years after the loss of Captain Rajar, Erin married his close friend, Major Alfred Cooper, an American Air Force pilot stationed at Lackenheath. Their union produced Hamish, who would become Colin's brother and closest friend. The boys spent most of their childhood in England until their father was transfered back to McGuire Air Force Base in the United States.
The transition was rough on Colin and Hamish. Once enrolled in the American school system, they endured teasing over their proper English accents and European culture. When asked by a guidance counselor if they had any interest in sports, they replied, "football. We play football." They soon after found themselves getting pounded on a gridiron in a game about which they had no clue. Hamish once made the grievous mistake of asking for a "rubber" out loud when he needed an eraser from the teacher. Once, Colin clocked a classmate who had told him the "Beatles suck" and "you suck." Branded as odd misfits, the boys grew closer together, girding against the cruelty they suffered at the hands of their American school mates.
Their first experience with instrumental music came by way of a kindly old Music teacher who identified with their social isolation. Colin was given a cello and Hamish an upright bass. With that, they discovered their calling, their place in the World. The boys spent most of their time together, learning their music lessons, playing in the school orchestra and discovering new instruments and new music. When the boys heard "Sgt. Pepper" on the radio, from their birthplace across the ocean, they knew exactly what they would do for the rest of their lives.
When Major Cooper retired from the Air Force, he bought a home for his family in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There, in the garage, the boys wrote, played, fought, alternately split up, got back together again and developed their band, The Nerks. By then, Colin had proudly declared himself "Raji" in defiance of the bigots who had tormented him in his childhood for his olive complexion.
The Nerks have declared that they intend to just play whatever comes through them for the rest of their lives. In their music can be heard the pain, the joys, the mystery and the odd coincidences of their lives. One song might sound like it came from an entirely different band than the next, but such is the ecclectic makeup of The Nerks. It may sound strange at times, but it is all true.
