The roots of The Slight Return began in November of 2005 when Bud Solomon met Ryan Wagner in the Spiller Hall dorm at the University of Oregon. They were soon joined by a fellow by the name of Steven Vail on the keys. The trio screwed around and wrote a few songs and tormented the other dorm residents. Early in 2006 the decision was made that the group wanted to take it up a level and actually play music for entertainment. They played under the name Sideways. A variety of fill-in musicians were used throughout 2006 on a gig to gig basis including Sean Stearns, Zach Bendt, Eric LeRoy, and Josh Shere.
