About Band
Forming in a dimly lit Auckland studio in the winter of 2008, The Zoup combine modern rock, crunchy and powerful guitar melodies, unique and exploratory vocal patterns and subtle, atmospheric sounds. The distinctive essence of this four piece has been captured on their debut six track EP which was released in September 2009 featuring the singles 'Control' and 'Missing'.
The Zoup have shown themselves as a revelation after winning the inaugural NZ Emergenza band competition in 2008 soon after they formed and then going on to also place 3rd (of a possible 260 bands) in the Australasian final at Sydney's legendary Metro Theatre. After recording demos with Brandon Reihana (Blindspott) engineering, The Zoup went on to create their self titled EP and have shown a penchant for creating songs with sonic and vocal depth with moments of calm and chaos all twisted together in an impressive and unpredictable debut offering.
The EP has captured the essence of the band live, which is a tornado of sounds led by a charismatic front man in Jaydn de Graaf. The band are a regular fixture on the Auckland live circuit and plan to tour in the next six months in amongst writing and recording follow up material for a full length album to be released in the future.
The seeds of The Zoup were first sown when cousins Jaydn de Graaf (vocals, guitar) and Dave Johnston (drums) spent summer holidays together as kids and decided to one day form a band. After high school Jaydn moved to Auckland and the two began experimenting with music and various lineups in various garages. They soon found their other two members in guitarist Dominic Mauger and bassist Tom Chou and after officially forming in April 2008 under the name Moloko Vellocet, the band changed their name to The Zoup in early 2009. Influenced by artists from all spheres The Zoup pay homage in their musical style to Incubus, Breaking Benjamin, Lostprophets, John Frusciante, Saosin, Anthony Green, the Foo Fighters and many others. Make sure you don’t miss out on their stunning new EP; bound to make you stand up and take notice of this band.
